Rain areas — common questions
Where can I see the rain areas in Singapore right now?+
The radar maps on this page are the Meteorological Service Singapore rain-area images: one covering Singapore itself and one covering the surrounding 240km. Coloured patches are rain the radar can see; the "right now" section above lists the towns where NEA's rain gauges actually measured rain in the latest five minutes.
Is it raining at Woodlands or Tuas checkpoint now?+
Check the "At the checkpoints" line above. It uses the NEA rain gauges nearest each checkpoint for the latest five minutes and NEA's two-hour forecast for the Woodlands and Tuas areas. Heavy rain slows traffic on the Causeway and the Second Link, so it is worth checking alongside the live traffic cameras.
What is the 240km rain area map for?+
It shows weather well beyond Singapore, over Johor, the Riau Islands and the Strait of Malacca. That makes it the one to watch for rain approaching from outside — such as the early-morning squall lines that sweep in from Sumatra — before it reaches the island.
What do light, moderate and heavy mean here?+
They come from the rain a gauge measured in five minutes, scaled to an hourly rate: light is under 2.5 mm an hour, moderate is 2.5 to 7.6 mm an hour, and heavy is anything above that.
How often is this updated?+
NEA's rain gauges report every five minutes and this page re-reads them at most five minutes later. The two-hour forecast is issued by NEA roughly every half hour. The radar images refresh when you press Refresh or reload the page.
